The fifth Australian/eROSITA-DE Joint Collaboration Workshop will be held online from 6-8 May 2025

Did you ever have an X-ray source and wondered whether it had interesting counterparts at other wavelengths? Did you ever have an optical source and wondered what you could learn from its radio properties? Did you ever have a radio source and wondered how to find out what your optical and X-ray colleagues already know about it?

This workshop will show you how to answer those questions, as well as why it is interesting to collaborate and get deeper and better data than are publicly available by using eROSITA and AAL proprietary data. ECRs in particular are encouraged to sign up.

The 2025 AAL/eROSITA-DE Workshop will move to a “school” format rather than our usual conference with talks. Over three days, experts in X-ray, optical/IR, and radio will present information on these different domains. They will help you get started using data from other wavelengths and explore new projects that combine the expertise among AAL and eROSITA-DE members.

Key Dates

Program released – mid April
Registration deadline – 30 April
Workshop held – 6-8 May 2025

About eROSITA

The eROSITA (extended Roentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) instrument onboard Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma satellite completed its first all-sky survey at X-ray wavelengths (eRASS1) in June 2020. The data obtained by eRASS1 already surpass those from previous all-sky X-ray surveys, having greater depth, image quality, and spectral coverage.

With a strong suite of local wide-field radio and optical astronomy surveys and facilities, the Australian community is well-placed to link with our German eROSITA colleagues in order to make the most of exciting new opportunities for multi-wavelength astronomy projects across the southern sky.

For more information see the eROSITA webpage.

Workshop Purpose and Structure

This online workshop brings together the Australian and German eROSITA communities to collaborate across wavelength domains and foster ideas for new projects. The new school format will provide training and multi-wavelength expertise to the community.

The focus will be on demonstrations to upskill the astronomy community with tools and data resources that support a multi-wavelength approach in their research. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get advice concerning your own projects, and to interact with others who had similar questions and found answers.

Tue  6 May:  Optical/IR astronomy
Wed 7 May:  Radio astronomy
Thu 8 May:  X-ray astronomy

To allow synchronous participation by both Australian and German parties, the workshop will be run each day 9:00-11:30am (CET), 3:00-5:30pm (AWST), 5:00-7:30pm (AEST).

Presenters include Neelesh Amrutha (ANU), Pietro Baldini (MPE), Sven Buder (ANU), Laura Driessen (University of Sydney), Natasha Hurley-Walker (ICRAR, Curtin), Zsofi Igo (MPE), David Kaltenbrunner (MPE), Brivael Laloux (MPE), Andrea Merloni (MPE), Simon O’Toole (Macquarie University), Karen Lee Waddell (UWA, CSIRO), and Christian Wolf (ANU).

Presentation recordings will be made available after the workshop on the eROSITA page of the Astronomy Australia website
