Australian LSST Workshop 2021

Online

AAL was proud to host the 2021 Australian LSST Workshop, held online on Monday 13 Dec 2021 from noon-5pm AEDT (9am-2pm AWST).

Australian Science Lead for the Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), Prof. Sarah Brough, provided an update on our in-kind contributions and funding to secure LSST data access rights for 47 Australian PIs (and a further 188 Junior Associates). After that, we heard from presenters on recent work relating to the LSST or the various LSST Science Collaborations, and discussed how we can all help build a better LSST@Australia community for everybody.

Australia is now halfway through its 10 year Strategic Partnership with the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

While there have been some significant achievements already, including 4 successful Large Programme proposals and 6 papers in Nature or Science from Australian-led ESO programmes, a lot has changed since Period 101. The introduction of a new web-based p1 tool, Dual-Anonymous Peer Review, and most recently the use of Distributed Peer Review for smaller programmes have all changed the way we write proposals.

In anticipation of the Period 111 proposal deadline at the end of September, AAL and Australia’s ESO Scientific Technical Committee and Users Committee representatives (Michael Murphy and Sarah Sweet, respectively) would like to invite our community to an on-line ESO proposal writing workshop to be held on Thursday 8 Sep from noon-2:30pm AEST (10am-12:30pm AWST).

Topics to be covered include:

  • The Observing Programmes Committee Process
  • Summary of current and imminent ESO instrumentation
  • The Dual-Anonymous Proposal & Distributed Peer Review processes

These topics will be followed by a round-table discussion involving a panel of major users of ESO and past OPC members about what makes a compelling proposal, and common mistakes to avoid. Participants will have the opportunity to pitch ideas for proposals to the panel for helpful feedback.

If you are interested in participating in this workshop, please register in advance here.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. A recording of the workshop will be made available afterwards upon request for anyone unable to join the event live.
