Quarterly update: December 2010

New Board Appointments

At the 2010 AGM members elected Professor Warrick Couch as Chair of AAL, and Professor Anne Green and Dr Ian Chessell as Directors of AAL. Warrick Couch is a Distinguished Professor of Astronomy at Swinburne University of Technology and a founding Director of AAL. Ian Chessell is the Chief Scientist for South Australia and Anne Green is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Sydney.

AAL thanks the outgoing Directors, Dr Martin Cole and Dr David Warren, for their service to AAL since 2007.

New Committees

AAL has formed two new committees: the Astronomy eResearch Advisory Committee (AeRAC), chaired by Darren Croton, and the Radio Telescopes Advisory Committee (RTAC), chaired by Anne Green. Terms of reference and committee membership can be found at the following pages:



NeCTAR submission

NeCTAR is project being lead by the University of Melbourne to develop national eResearch collaboration infrastructure. The total Commonwealth funding for the project, provided as part of the Super Science initiative, is $47 million over four years. In October 2010 NeCTAR released a consultation paper. Following this, and an AAL meeting with NeCTAR, AAL was pleased to work with a large number of people to write a submission to NeCTAR. This response was submitted by AAL on 5th November 2010.

The date for the next AAL AGM has been set for 11th November 2011.
