PILOT The PILOT ProjectThe proposed PILOT is a 2-metre-class optical/infrared telescope that would be built and operated at Concordia Station, Dome C, in the Australian Antarctic Territory. PILOT is the first stage of the development path for a possible large optical observing facility in Antarctica. The Australian Antarctic Astronomy Advisory Committee (AAAAC)AAAAC is established to provide advice to AAL on research and development relevant to Antarctic astronomy within Australia. It will also disseminate information to, and consult with, the Australian astronomical community regarding all aspects of Antarctic astronomy. The Design StudyThrough a subcontract with AAL, UNSW will establish and host the science office that will be responsible for the initiation and completion of the Design Study for PILOT over the next 12 months. The science office will produce a detailed science case for PILOT, and will prepare the case for the funds from the astronomy NCRIS strategic options to be used towards the construction of PILOT. |
